1946 Chevrolet 2 Ton Coal Truck

In the 1940s, coal was delivered to homes by coal trucks that backed up to the house and used a metal chute to dump the coal into a designated basement coal bin or room through a basement window. While some deliveries were made using trucks with conveyor belts, a chute was the most common method, and the coal then had to be shoveled from the bin into the home's coal furnace. The coal delivery process was a regular and essential part of winter preparation, with coal merchants serving as a valued community resource.

For auction, a 1946 Chevrolet 2 ton coal truck presented in barn find condition but still exhibiting the name of a beloved Lebanon, Pennsylvania community resource, Zeller Coal and Oil and when residents saw the yellow truck turning the corner, they knew that warmth was guaranteed.

Exterior
A big grille fronts wide fenders on this old rig, opening like the baleen of a great yellow whale, this one with barnacles in the form of surface rust spots on its sun ravaged skin. There are glimmers of brightness however, such as the top of the cab wearing a crown of cab lights over a robust, two part windshield. The steel bed was once red and much of the yellow painted writing remains while the tailgate and the release hatch are thick with surface rust. Large mudflaps prevail and 20-inch wheels still keep the delivery truck upright. There's a steel ladder attached to the truck and an open tool box mounted to the side.

Interior
White paint throughout the interior is peeling if it hasn't flaked off already and surface rust has crept in. But it's not hard to imagine this view in better times, when this served the working man and community each day. A blue cloth bench seat is weathered and stained and the steering wheel is now more gray than black. The simple instrument cluster fits in a rectangular frame and is in decent, vintage condition while the numbers of the odometer have peeled and faded.

Drivetrain
She's rusty, but the 216.5ci inline six, or parts of it, remain in the engine bay. This has a 1-barrel carburetor and would have been rated at 92 horsepower, enough to tote around heavy loads of coal with 5.17 gears in back and a 4-speed manual attached to the engine.

Undercarriage
Heavy duty leaf springs are utilized front and rear as are drum brakes, and a single exhaust carries a stock style muffler.

Drive-Ability
There are no keys associated with the truck, but that doesn't stop us from thinking what this would like restored to its original colors and condition.
