1953 Mack B61 Thermodyne Wrecker

The 1953 Mack B Series trucks featured the introduction of the Thermodyne diesel engine, a significant advancement in Mack's engine technology. This open chamber, direct injection engine established Mack's reputation for fuel efficiency and performance in the diesel engine market. The Thermodyne engine was a key factor in the B Series' popularity, with around 80% of all B Series trucks eventually equipped with some variant of it.

Up for auction is a 1953 Mack B61 Thermodyne wrecker showing 17,308 miles, but the true miles are unknown. What an incredible relic from the 50's. It's complete and shows expected patina and with some TLC would make an incredible museum piece or show truck. There are no keys for the rig, but don't let that stop you from bidding on this rare piece of Americana.

Exterior
Our massive rig is coated with worn out red paint with matching paint creating halo rings around the wheels. A massive battering ram like front bumper protects the grille which of course is topped by the famous Mack bulldog who reappears in profile on the hood sides. The exhaust stack veers from the red coverage with decent chrome reflectivity, and the top is replete with amber lights from the cab lights to the emergency light to flashers, this truck was likely very visible when servicing a work truck in the 50's. 20-inch wheels are utilized on all three axles and the tow rigging in back is complete with cables and enormous hooks. Finally, bullet shaped housing holds a big red emergency light on the left front fender.

Interior
You step onto a side tank to get up, way up, into the cabin where we find red painted steel inner doors with metal hardware leading to black vinyl bucket seats that are mounted high, dirty but intact. Up front, the red dash houses a myriad of gauges, knobs, levers, and toggles, all with patina but having great bones for a restoration. A black rubber mat covers the floor and the steel gas pedal wears the Mack name while the tall shifter rises from the floor. We note the vinyl headliner is hanging down.

Drivetrain
The engine is dirty but looks complete and is a 673ci inline six cylinder diesel engine with fuel injection, tied to a 5-speed manual transmission with a 2-speed axle and rear gears at 5.34 ratio. Drum brakes, and big ones, occupy each wheel on three axles.

Undercarriage
A single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler before heading skyward through the chrome stack. Heavy duty leaf springs are found front and rear.

Drive-Ability
There are no keys for this vintage wrecker.
